Before I start, I'm guessing you already know of this restaurant. It's especially popular within the western community, courtesy of Quentin Tarantino and the celebrities who have dined in Gonpachi. This is my second time here and I'm not writing about the Izakaya in the lower levels, I'm writing about the sushi bar on level 3. Out of the many "casual" sushi places that I have been to, I think Gonpachi's sushi is delicious and very affordable. By the way, when I say casual, I am referring to places where I can sit down and order whatever I want instead of the Omakase course menu that is commonly served in the premium sushi restaurants.
Just to name a few, the raw octopus was fantastic and so was the suckers, horse mackerel and red ark shell clam |
Kawahagi with the liver is always a great piece, the sardine and medium fatty tuna are popular choices too |
Mixed tempura platter |
Grilled Sirloin Steak 150g |
Homemade cold Tofu (it's almost like pudding) |
Sea Urchin Chawanmushi |
What I like about Gonpachi is that other than being given the freedom of ordering whatever sushi I want, I can also order Izakaya dishes like the Tempura, grilled beef and the fantastic homemade tofu. Given how popular this restaurant is in the international scene, you're in the luck, the staff can speak English and communicate very well. I'll be keeping this review short since there's not much to elaborate on. Overall, this place is definitely between 3.5 and 4 in my books.
