Craving for a large sandwich with thick fluffy soft bread? Try this small cafe in Ginza behind the Kabuki Theatre. This cafe is called American and it serves only sandwiches. Before I continue with this review, do not at any point think that this is an American sandwich cafe that serves American style sandwich accompanied with french fries, coleslaw, Mayonnaise and ketchup condiments etc...NO! It is not like that.
If you are familiar with Japanese culture, you'd know that flexibility is not exactly a value which they believe in (from what I have been observing for the last 10 years and counting, no offense though), so don't expect the ability to customize your sandwich or ask for Mayonnaise, things like that. I don't see any of the customers do it and everyone seems to be happy chowing down on their sandwich. You can try asking for cheese to be melted with your pastrami sandwich, but if you get confused look or an X sign, remember "When in Rome, do as the Romans do".
Lets have a look at the 3 sandwiches that my parents and I ordered:
Egg Mayo Sandwich (500 Yen) |
Pastrami Sandwich (600 Yen) |
Ham and Cheese sandwich (500 Yen) |
Notice how everything is 500 Yen (except the pastrami and roast chicken sandwich) and how big the portions are in the pictures? DAMN GOOD DEAL! The eggo mayo sandwich (Tamago Sando) was outstanding! The Pastrami sandwich was a little difficult to eat because of the lack of condiments like mayonnaise; I saw a Japanese guy just eating the pastrami and not the bread though, and the ham and cheese sandwich was pretty good when combined with the tuna mayo.
You may also ask the staff for a take-away if you can't finish your food. One thing to note, I have no idea if the staff can speak English. I ordered and spoke in Japanese the whole time I was there and even though my Dad complimented them in English (he can't speak Japanese), they looked as if they didn't really understand him. So if possible, I hope you have a Japanese speaker or at least know some basic Katakana if you do go. Try the egg mayo sandwich, NO REGRETS!
I know I have been promoting the egg mayo sandwich like crazy but the other sandwiches were pretty good too despite the lack of condiments. The bread alone is freakin amazing; soft, fluffy and yet solid when you bite into it. I'll give this place an overall rating of 4/5 due to the outstanding price performance and the cosy comfortable feeling that I had while eating here.
