Iwa is a 1 star Michelin sushi restaurant located in Ginza, Tokyo. Their claim to fame is their moderately priced, or should I say affordable, lunch omakase sushi course. For less than 9000 Yen, you get 12 pieces of nigiri sushi, 3 types of maki sushi, miso soup and a fantastic tamago. One of their chefs, Tsunoda-san, speaks fluent English and not only described each type of sushi in detail, but maintained a conversation with me and my parents throughout the entire meal. He was very friendly and even cracked jokes with us. I guess you could say, this was the first time I experienced a sushi meal in Japan where a chef would converse with me in the same manner as how other sushi chefs would converse with their Japanese customers.
Before I continue, let's have a look at the sushi I ate:
The chef who spoke fluent English, Wakame, Hirame, Kinmedai, Shiroi Ebi |
Kobashira, Isaki, Maguro Tzuke, Otoro, Ika, Uni |
Hotate (marinated), Miso Soup, Aji, Anago, 3 types of Maki, Tamago |
If you have checked out my other reviews on value for money lunch places like Sushi Ya and Sushi Tsu (excluding the extra pieces), you would've noticed that each chef has his own style of serving and choice for the type of fish he would recommend to his customers. This was the first time I ate Otoro that was very lightly grilled for an extra crisp texture, marinated hotate in shoyu and kelp, and a tamago that was literally like a custard cake (similar to the one served in Sushi Ya).
Needless to say, this was a fantastic meal and definitely one to remember. I can't say for sure if this place is better than Sushi Ya, both are roughly at the same high quality standard, but it beats out Sushi Tsu at least. Based on price performance, this place is outstanding, and as expected from a Michelin Star restaurant, the taste was definitely up to standard. I hope I can come back here in the future.
