Orankuya おらんく家 @ Kitashinchi, Osaka

This is a favourite of mine in Osaka. This is not a cheap sushi place, but neither is it an overly expensive joint like the Michelin Starred restaurants. I would describe Orankuya as a sushi restaurant meant for entertaining clients and businessmen. As such, the sushi you get here is of pretty high quality at a reasonable price (to me at least).

I've been going to this restaurant every time I go to Osaka for the last 7 years or so, shall we have a look at some of the photos that I've taken over the years? I'll be using a mix of English and Japanese in the captions.

As decent as the pictures may look, I have to admit, your experience will depend on the chef who serves you. There was one year where I was assigned to a chef who, to be blunt, wasn't very good in his craftsmanship; I found bones in sushi. The subsequent visits however, he was gone (probably fired for all I know), and the sushi was great again. Depending on the chef you get, some of them may put sauce and condiments for you, some of them would prefer if you put the sauce and condiments yourself. Frankly, I'm not too fussy about this part, my focus is on the enjoyment of my meal. Other than that 1 unfortunate experience, I enjoyed myself every time I came here.

In addition to sushi, Orankuya also serves a variety of small dishes ranging from tempura to karaage dishes and even simmered dishes that you can find in Izakaya restaurants. The prices are all found on the menu and walls, so don't worry if you lose track of your expenditure.

Do take note, Orankuya has 3 restaurants in the Kitashinchi area. It doesn't really matter which you go to because the standard is more or less the same, but if you make a reservation, be sure to know which one to go. I usually patronize the Orankuya West store.
