Sushi Aso is a sushi ya that is a little out of the way from the main Hakata Station area but not as far as Osamu. Having said that, it is located in a housing estate so if you do not intend on getting lost, PLEASE TAKE A TAXI; now's not the time to cheap out on transport. Anyway, I came here for lunch sometime in September 2017 and yes it was another great lunch and another restaurant to add on my list of good Japanese restaurants. The restaurant is located on the 2nd level of what appears to be someone's house. You will have to press the buzzer and indicate your reservation name (don't worry they can speak English) before they unlock the door for you. Look out for the restaurant sign:
Now, regarding my meal, the one big unfortunate element of my meal though was that I was not able to secure a counter seat for my lunch, instead my family and I were given a private room which to many people would find it great because of privacy and whatever reasons. However, me and family being the foodies that we are, would always prefer to eat at the counter where we can see the chef and communicate with him as he prepares our sushi. But before I continue, shall we have a look at the pictures?

I have to say, for 8000 Yen per person, this was a bloody good deal considering how many things I was served. What distinguishes Sushi Aso from other hakata sushi yas is that his rice is stickier and tastier; I'm guessing he used red vinegar as part of his sushi mix concoction since his rice was brownish. Whatever it is that he did to his rice, it tasted great with the sushi neta. I did notice that his sushi was considerably smaller than most places. If you compare the size of the nigiri in Sushi Aso with that of Sushi Ryu, the former is about half, maybe even a third of the size of the latter. However, smaller pieces means more variety and more things to try. I also have to praise his presentation - just look at his plates and how it's decorated, beautiful stuff.
To end, I would gladly come back here! Other than being unable to secure counter seats, there's really nothing to complain about. The presentation of the food, the taste and the value of the meal really made my trip from my hotel to this restaurant very worth it. I look forward to my next visit here whenever that will be, only this time, I hope to sit at the counter and watch the chef as he prepares and serves his sushi.
