Aji Takebayashi Kaiseki 味 竹林 @ Akasaka, Fukuoka

Aji Takebayashi is a Kaiseki restaurant specializing in vegetable / plant dishes grown from the Kyushu region. It may sound like a turn off at first since it's technically rabbits' food, I myself was very skeptical at that point in time. However, this meal reminded me of just how good the Japanese are; they can turn any kind of ingredient into something delicious and creative. That being said, don't worry there are also fish and meat dishes served.

Crab with seaweed and sauteed mushrooms
Assorted Sashimi
Pike soup served in a "tea pot"

Wild rice with chestnuts
Assorted vegetables / plants
Assorted vegetables / plants portioned out
Grilled Barracuda
Assorted vegetables 2
Prawn and fish fried with shredded potato
Saga beef with wild rice
Wanna know something? The rice tasted EVEN BETTER than the beef
Second helping of that delicious rice! Topped with dried anchovies
Fruits dessert
Melon Mousse
So as you can tell from the pictures, half the dishes served are vegetables or plants. However, keep in mind that they are well marinated and cooked to perfection. I also have to commend the grilled barracuda and that shredded potato dish. The barracuda had a nice crunch on the outside but was soft and tender on the inside while the prawns and fish fried with shredded potato was something out of the ordinary. The dish that stole the show was the saga beef with wild rice, and no it wasn't the beef (although very delicious), it was his RICE. His rice was so tasty that you can eat it plain; no sauce, no toppings, it was just fantastic by itself. On my second helping, I ate the dried anchovies first just so that I can eat the rice plain. It was that good!

Of course, all good things must come to an end and his desserts did not disappoint. His melon mousse was the perfect way to end the meal; not overly sweet or overpowering on the flavour, to put it simply, it was just pure joy and I cherished every mouth full of it.

This was my only Kaiseki meal during my trip to Fukuoka so I can't really compare it with other places in the city. It won't be fair to compare it with Kaiseki restaurants in cities like Tokyo and Osaka either due to its focus on meat and fish dishes. Overall, I think it was a great meal and would definitely consider coming back here again.
