Let's be honest here, why oh why would I travel hours to Tokyo and eat tofu as one of my meals when there are so many other more appetizing cuisines out there? That was my initial reaction when my father told me that he and my mum really wanted to try this restaurant. It was quite a miracle that I managed to make a lunch reservation just a day before our chosen date because the concierge told me that Tofuya Ukai is very popular restaurant. Immediately, my eyes widened and I figured "all right, I suppose there's more to tofu cuisine in Japan than my narrow minded view". We took a taxi to the restaurant and to our amazement, the restaurant was located inside a huge garden. We had to walk through a path to reach the restaurant. I have to admit, that short walk was extremely peaceful and really set our mind at ease for a delicious meal ahead. We were given a private room with a great view of the garden which really made us feel relaxed and yet excited for what's to come. Low and behold, the meal started:
View from my room |
Matsu Course set Lunch which cost 7560 Yen |
Dumpling with Bamboo Shoot |
Deep fried tofu glazed with Miso and a Tamago |
Seasonal Sashimi consist of Spanish mackerel and Snapper |
Steamed Daikon in broth |
Assortment of various appetizers. Instead of clams, the white bowl dish was replaced with snow crab at the very last minute at no additional cost. |
Tofu served in Soy milk. Look at how generous they are with the amount of soy milk for 3 people! |
The soy milk was neither thick or thin, just nice and really smooth down your throat |
Deep fried Kanpachi |
Steamed rice with chicken. Very very healthy end to an already healthy meal |
Soy Milk jelly with red bean paste |
So for 7560 yen, considering the quality of the dishes served, the portions and the sheer number of items, this was a bloody good deal! No way can you get such a good meal like this at this kind of pricing in Singapore. I have to say, this meal really opened my eyes to tofu cuisine in Japan. It cleared all my doubts and skepticism of how good tofu can be. Now having said all this, I can't say it was one of the best experiences I've ever had, but I can say with confidence that this was a really good meal worthy of a solid 4/5 rating. I think one meal like this in a holiday full of sushi, kaiseki and tempura meals is great change of pace and quite frankly, a good break from the usual Japanese food. I wouldn't mind paying this place a second visit in the near future.
