Sushi Yu 鮨由う @ Roppongi, Tokyo (Feb 2019)

Sushi Yu is a one michelin starred sushi restaurant located in a small alley in the Roppongi area, very close to Roppongi Midtown. Straight to the point, this place is quite unique compared the other sushi restaurants in the sense that the chef, Ozaki Jun, serves many small dishes (tsumami), almost more than the sushi pieces. Furthermore, unlike other places that serve you the standard sashimi and maybe some grilled or simmered items, Chef Ozaki-san's items are rather creative like his monkfish liver paste rice, smoked spanish mackerel with shoyu and mustard sauce and even that hairy crab with sea urchin and caviar special sushi that you see on the cover of this blog post.

Homemade Tofu
Snapper sashimi in sweet dashi broth
Roasted bamboo shoots with herbs
Rice, hairy crab, sea urchin and Caviar, all in one bite
Fresh big oyster from Hiroshima
Smoked spanish mackerel with shoyu mustard sauce
Grilled belt fish
Crab broth chawanmushi

After eating half a portion, Chef Ozaki will add in some rice and marinated seaweed
You mix it up and that's what you get, almost like a brand new dish eh?
Simmered squid with its eggs (komochi ika)
His signature monkfish liver paste rice
Puffer fish milt with hairy crab and rice

If you close your eyes, you'd think you're eating porridge with a really nice texture
Kasugo dai

Squid
Horse mackerel
Grilled Black trout (nodoguro), this was one of the best nodoguro's I have ever eaten

Marinated lean tuna
Medium fatty Tuna

Gizzard Shad
Sweet shrimp
Seaweed egg
Bafun sea urchin
Conger eel
Refreshing fish soup
His gigantic futo maki topped with mixed lean and medium fatty tuna. He gave me an extra one!

So what did you think? 24 items for 20,000 yen. Although not the best cost performance in my opinion, it is still a reasonable deal considering the quality and quantity of the items served. I was really full after the meal; his futomaki alone was quite a mouthful and will definitely deal the ending blow to your hunger; moreover I had two of it since my mum couldn't eat anymore.

Apart from the food, Chef Ozaki is quite an entertainer. He loves posing for the camera and would crack jokes with his customers throughout the meal. He doesn't much English though so if you can speak some Japanese, he will be more than happy to converse and engage with you. By the way, he has two dinner timings - 6pm and 830pm and his recent instagram post states that he will opening a second sushi restaurant in the Hiro area in Tokyo. Whether he will continue being the chef in Sushi Yuu or head over to his other restaurant is still undetermined.

Anyway, I had a great dinner here and would come back in the future!
