I kid you not, this might possibly be the best pizza restaurant in Tokyo. In fact, this one of the best pizza places I've ever eaten at, and yes I am a pizza junkie. My parents and I were served by a very friendly Chef Luigi who settled down in Tokyo and is one of the chefs tasked with making and serving these wonderful pizzas. I'm not sure how many chefs are appointed to be at the pizza bar but from what I see on Instagram, it seems like maybe two or three of them would alternate in between shifts or even days. In any case, during my visit, I've had one heck of a damn good meal as I gorged myself on pizza after pizza. The crust was light, chewy and had a great crispy texture when you bite into it. It wasn't paper thin like a biscuit and you could taste the sweetness of the dough as you sink your teeth into it. Frankly, in my opinion, it's so good you could eat it plain. The toppings and cheese weren't overpowering either as it didn't flood the pizza; it was very well balanced such that you can taste both the ingredients and the dough itself. As a pizza lover, this was simply amazing.
Let's have a look at pictures of the things my parents and I ate:
Sweet Potato starter |
Chef Luigi allowed us to try these very fresh Tomatoes from Hokkaido, full of flavour and sweetness, no after taste whatsoever. Simply pure umami |
The Pizzino - Mascarpone, Olives and truffle essence. This is a MUST-order |
The Bufala - Fresh buffalo mozzarella cheese, basil and tomatoes. This one really set the standard for the things to come |
The Diavola - rockets and salami as the toppings! Soooo soooo good! |
Honey mixed with truffles. This is for you to add to the Cinque Formaggi pizza |
The Cinque Formaggi. Usually, 4 types of cheese are used for this pizza, but Chef Luigi said he actually uses six for this pizza served here. |
Can you see the light drizzles of truffle infused honey? |
That's him! Chef Luigi. He speaks fluent English and Japanese btw. |
I can't say it enough, I really enjoyed myself here. This was one of the highlights of my Tokyo trip. If you're a pizza lover, you'd not only appreciate the food here but you'd also take a minute to admire how the dough in its raw form is just full of air bubbles, extremely soft and light. If I can reproduce at home, I'll be a very happy man. A solid 5/5 for this one as I will definitely come back here the next time I'm in Tokyo. If Chef Luigi is reading this or any of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel staff, thank you so much for this amazing meal and accepting my reservation to dine here! I will be back!
